Philip Kennedy

Dr. Philip R. Kennedy is the CEO and Chief Scientist at Neural Signals, Inc. which he founded in 1987. He also practices neurology at the Community Neurological Clinic that he founded in 1997. He received his M.D. from the National University of Ireland, his Ph.D. in Physiology (Neurophysiology and Neuroanatomy) from Northwestern University in Chicago, and completed his medical internship and residency in Neurology at Emory University Medical School in Atlanta, Georgia where he is now based.

Dr. Kennedy's research interest lies in the field of brain and machine interfacing, and for over two decades, he has pursued research and created innovated technology with the goal of providing the locked-in – people who are unable to communicate because of brain stem strokes, ALS and other neurobiological diseases and injuries – with the ability to communicate and control external devices, including computers. Dr. Kennedy pioneered and developed an implantable device for detecting and transmitting signals from the cerebral cortex which was successfully used in 1998 to allow a totally paralyzed man to control a computer cursor by focused thinking.

He has won wide recognition for his work including many awards and media publications such as CNN (2007), PBS (2006), BBC (2006), Discovery Channel (2006), Discover Magazine Award (1999), Atlanta Magazine's Health Care Hero's Award (1999), World Technology Network Award (London, England; 2000), and Resource Forum Entrepreneur Award (2001). He has authored some 30 publications, books, and book chapters, including a non-fiction book for children.
