Born in Toulouse, France in 1961, Mr. Bernard Werber started writing short stories at the age of 7. In high school, he published a fanzine, an experience which would later be useful in his novels. He went on to study law in Toulouse, then journalism at the Ecole Superieure de Journalisme in Paris, after which he worked as a scientific journalist for the Nouvel Observateur from 1983-1990.
Mr. Werber published his first novel, Fourmis (translated into English as Empire of the Ants), in 1991, the first of his Fourmis trilogy. Since then, he has written numerous novels including Empire of the Angels and L'Ultime Secret (The Ultimate Secret), experimental books, short stories, comic books, a play, and films including Nos Amis Les Terriens (Our Friends the Earthlings) which was released in April 2007. The works of Mr. Werber, which are not intended to prove or support any particular scientific theory but to present in a work of fiction various little-known discoveries to the public at large, have been translated into 35 languages. With 15 million copies sold throughout the world, he is one of the most widely known modern French authors in the world, and particularly appreciated in Korea, where enjoys celebrity status.
Mr. Werber is also a member of INREES, Institute for Research on Extraordinary Experiences, an association which exists to promote the acknowledgement of extraordinary or unusual experiences among the clientele of medical health professionals, doctors and carers, aiming to "remove the customary divisions between the official and the irrational views of the world. There are facts and occurrences and it is important to discuss them normally without passion or systematic exclusion."
