Jongkyeong Chung
Professor of Biological Sciences, KAIST, Korea

Dr. Jongkyeong (JK) Chung is Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at KAIST and also a member of KAIST Institute for the Biocentury (KIB). He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Seoul National University in Korea and earned a Ph.D. degree in cell biology from Harvard University in 1993. After his postdoctoral experience at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, he joined the faculty of KAIST as an Assistant Professor in 1996. Since then, he has been using both mammalian cell system and fruit fly genetics to understand the regulatory mechanisms of cell growth. He is also interested in understanding the pathological mechanism of Parkinson's disease. Recently, he has established a novel link between the two genetic factors of Parkinson's disease, named as the PINK1-Parkin pathway, and also explained the pathogenic mechanism of some familial types of Parkinson's disease. For his outstanding research, he has won various awards and honors, such as "20 Outstanding Korean Medical Scientists Award" (2002), "Scientist of the Month Award" from Korean government (2006), and "Best Research Award" from KAIST (2008).
