Shun-ichi Amari
Director, RIKEN Brain Science Institute, Japan

Dr. Shun-ichi Amari is the Director of the RIKEN Brain Science Institute (RIKEN BSI) of Japan, where he also serves as Group Director of the Brain-Style Intelligence Research Group, Group Director of the Brain-Style Information Systems Research Group, and Laboratory Head of the Laboratory for Mathematical Neuroscience. Dr. Amari is also Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo, his alma mater where he received his Doctorate in Mathematical Engineering in 1963, and later taught as a Professor in the Department of Mathematical Engineering and Information Physics.

His recent affiliations include the IEICE of Japan, for which he was President from 2004 to 2005. He is a fellow member of IEEE. He also served as President of INNS in 1996, and APNNA in 1993.

Dr. Amari has won wide recognition for his accomplishments including such recent prestigious awards and honors as the APNNA Special Award, the Japanese Statistical Society Special Award, the Best Paper Award of IEEE Signal Processing, the Caianiello Memorial Award, the IEEE Emanuel R. Piore Award, the IEEE Neural Networks Pioneer Award, and the Japan Academy Award, and his journal publications have been widely cited in related research and studies.
